Lent 2012: A Season for Prayer and Renewal
Seeking a New Vision for our Congregation's
Purpose in God's Mission

This simple resource has been developed as a way of living out a resolution passed at the 2011 Synod Assembly regarding mission directions for our synod. This resolution called our synod to "encourage all congregations…to consider entering into a time of prayerful discovery of their purpose in God's mission within their unique context." A similar challenge was part of the Living Into the Future Together (LIFT) report affirmed at the 2011 Churchwide Assembly.

This resource can be used during the season of Lent to help congregations engage in a time of prayerful discovery of their purpose in God's mission.

Synod to Participate in "Give to the Max Day"

Forward Together 2011 Annual Synod Appeal Inviting individuals to invest in God's Mission

Tending God's Mission In Northwestern Minnesota.
Our Northwestern Minnesota Synod serves God's mission of blessing and redeeming the world through Jesus Christ. We do God's work
TOGETHER by Helping congregations grow their ministries; Raising up and supporting hundreds of congregational leaders, pastors and rostered lay leaders; Nurturing life-giving relationships among our people, parishes and partner ministries; Developing new ministries and renewing established congregations.

Fueling Ministries NOW.
Mission Support giving from congregations fuels ongoing ministries of our church such as global mission, seminaries, and new ministries in North America. Because these are shared ministries, 51% of mission support goes to the ELCA churchwide organization, while 49% is invested in synod ministries. ELCA members give "first mile" gifts through their congregations. Forward Together invites individuals to make "second mile" gifts directly to our synod so that we achieve the goals of our 2011 synod mission plan. This Forward Together appeal seeks at least $75,000 in such "second mile" giving. The first $30,600 (or 40% of the total dollars received, whichever is greater) will go toward achieving the goals of our synod mission plan For 2011.

Investing in God's FUTURE.
In addition, 60% of all funds raised (above $30,600) will go toward exciting opportunities not covered in our synod mission plan:

1. Going With the Gospel with new ministries such as The Project F-M, Living Grace of Hawley, Waters of Grace of Frazee, and Peoples Church of Bemidji/Cass Lake.

2. Raising up the Next Generation of disciples with Vibrant Faith Ministries, Luther Crest and Pathways Bible Camps, and Lutheran Campus Ministry in Bemidji and Moorhead (program grants).

3. Expanding Globally by supporting the "Bible Women Ministry" of the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church in southern India.

How You Can Participate.
Folks in the Northwestern Minnesota Synod are eager to move forward. Anxieties over the economy and church squabbles will not hold us back. Disciples of Jesus all around us are proclaiming—loud and clear! —"we are moving forward together." You can participate by:

• Praying for the appeal's success
• Telling others about Forward Together
• Making your generous gift to the appeal by sending a check to the synod office or giving online through

E-Communication made E-Z
Tips from Calvary Lutheran Church of Perham

Go Ape Over MailChimp! If your congregation has ever “monkeyed around” with automated mass emails, MailChimp may be just what you need. At Calvary, MailChimp delivers weekly announcements and sermons to members and friends. MailChimp helps you design email newsletters, share them on social networks, integrate with services you already use, and track your results. It's like your own personal publishing platform. There’s even a “Forever Free” plan which allows you to store up to 2,000 subscribers and send up to 12,000 emails per month. Learn more about MailChimp...

Email Lists. All members of Calvary with email accounts are automatically subscribed to The Wire, an email list hosted by our local internet service provider. It’s a great way to inform members of immediate needs and news. You just type in one email address and the message is broadcast to everyone on that email list. Your internet service provider can give you more information or you may want to use an email list offered by web based services like Google or Yahoo.

Monthly Newsletter. Members can subscribe to an email only version of The Calvary Connection, which is a color newsletter in PDF format (which means you can also print it or save it on your computer’s hard drive). An e-newsletter can serve you better with links to much more information according to your interest. They are also a super way to “go green.”

Web Site. A web site can be a great way to inform and engage those first encountering your church as well as its members. Calvary’s web site offers visitors links to worship webcasts, sermons, weekly announcements, calendar, monthly newsletter, photo/video albums, daily word and Bible search, Council minutes, Annual Reports, Men’s, Women’s, Youth News, Education News, Service Opportunities, signups for Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Worship Helpers, and subscriptions to the weekly worship webcast, announcements, sermons and monthly newsletter.

Encourage Giving to Your Congregational Endowment Fund

The central role of the mission endowment fund is to enhance the mission outreach of the congregation by introducing members to "asset stewardship" and encouraging their growth in whole-life giving. Leadership can focus on their role through these four actions—educate, encourage, enlist, and excite. In the pdf below, you will find ideas and resources to help your congregation grow its endowment fund throughout the year in order that mission outreach programs may reach others in Christ's name.

Prayers for Christmas and Advent 2010

Members of the Northwestern Minnesota Synod have graciously contributed petitions that can be incorporated into the weekly "Prayer of the Church" as we move through the seasons of Advent and Christmas. These timely prayers help us remember our ELCA, our synod, and our members who deal with challenges in their lives during this holiday time.
