This past weekend 800 Middle School students, WHEATYs (Youth Leaders), and Adult Leaders lived into the theme "Be." at the Synod's Youth Gathering in Grand Forks, ND. It was a truly remarkable event, with Trey Everett and Dan Wolpert of MICAH walking with us through the theme verses of Romans 12:2 and Psalm 46:10, and teaching prayer practices through example and drama. Bishop Larry Wohlrabe shared his faith story and added the word "belonger" to our vocabularies. [...]

2012 ELCA Youth Gathering: Citizens with the Saints - Ephesians 2:14-20

July 18-22, 2012
New Orleans, LA

Jesus is our peace. In his life and death on the cross, Jesus broke down the dividing walls so that we are no longer strangers and outsiders, but we are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God.

The Gathering program is built around three core practices (Discipleship, Peacemaking, and Justice) in which particpants will be immersed before they come to New Orleans, while they are together in New Orleans, and hopefully, in the community of their congregations when they return home.

Registration Opens for the 2012 National Gathering on October 9, 2011 at 2:00 pm EST (1:00 CST).

Equipping Youth Ministry Leaders Training Workshops
All  adult leaders in youth ministry (whether pastor, paid staff, or faithful volunteer) are invited to attend any and all of these events.

Equipping Youth Ministry Leaders training events will be available to all adults who work with youth in congregations around the synod. These events will be a mix of face-to-face meetings through the coming year, as well as online webinars that you and other youth ministry leaders can complete at home or in small groups around a computer.

The topics provided at these events include:

  • The Landscape of Youth Ministry
  • Youth Ministry as Faith Formation
  • Lutheran Theology: How God is at Work in the World
  • Lutheran Theology: How Lutherans Read the Bible
  • Your Role as a Leader
  • Strategic Planning Leading a Small Group
  • Faith Conversations Planning for the Unexpected

These Youth Ministry Training events are FREE and designed for ALL youth ministry adult leaders across our synod.  Plan to attend and bring as many as you can from your congregation! 

  • Parents and grandparents 
  • mentors and small group leaders
  • staff or volunteer.

These training events are designed for all youth ministry adult leaders, regardless if you are planning to attend the 2012 Youth Gathering or not. For those who are planning on attending the Gathering, however, you will have an opportunity to stay for the last hour for a 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering information meeting. (It's not too early to start planning!)

A total of three different face­to-face training events will be held -- in  Spring  2011, Fall 2011, and Spring 2012. Each event will be offered more than once to allow access to as many as possible. Each session will be approximately three hours long, with adult leader training for the first two hours followed by a one hour 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering information event.
