Reporting Sexual Misconduct

All forms of sexual misbehavior by clergy and lay leaders with members of the church are unacceptable within the life of Christ’s church. The church is called to be a safe place—a place to worship, learn, work, love, and receive care free from sexual misconduct.

The Northwestern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA is committed to preventing misconduct and to responding with justice, compassion, and transparency whenever concerns arise. All allegations are taken seriously. Reports are listened to, investigated, and—when substantiated—addressed with appropriate consequences. Above all, we prioritize care for those who have been harmed.

How to Report Misconduct

1. Contact the Bishop of the Northwestern Minnesota Synod

If you believe you have experienced:
- abuse,
- inappropriate behavior, or
- unwanted sexualized conduct by a rostered minister (Pastor or Deacon) or a Synod Authorized Minister, please contact:

This provides an alternative reporting pathway for anyone who—for any reason—feels unable to contact the local bishop directly.

- Attention to your needs, including help identifying advocates, pastoral support, or counseling resources.
- Your information handled with respect for privacy, while acknowledging that confidentiality cannot always be guaranteed.
- A response that prioritizes safety, healing, and the well-being of the church community.
